Jaguar Oaxaca Black Clay Pottery Barro Negro Handmade Signed Mexican Folk ArtFrom San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, this black clay majestic jaguar is amazing. On our most recent trip to Mexico, we had a lovely visit with Belem Juarez. Belem is the niece of the infamous Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto or
Dona Rosa
and has learned the centuries old craft of Barro Negro pottery from her aunt and family.
Most black clay pottery is gray and has a matte finish. It was Belem's aunt Dona Rosa who discovered that if the black clay was burnished or rubbed with a quartz stone, just before firing, the clay became very compacted. Then, when firing at a low temp the clay turned black and looked very shiny.
This powerful symbol of might and authority, handcrafted by Belem, is elegant and has a burnished shiny fierce face with open mouth and large powerful fangs. His (or her) nose is burnished, detailed with an etched background and hand carved with perforated leaves and flowers that extend to the back of his head. The bottom is signed by Belem.
Belem suggested that her perforated pieces are able to withstand the light of a tealight candle, unlike red clay, and works well with incense.
This jaguar, the symbol of might and authority of the rulers, is a lovely gift and beautiful for a Mexican Folk Art collector. 100% authentic and real black clay, barro negro, from Oaxaca, Mexico.
