Field charger assembly CHG00065 for the AccuClean AFD14D and Trane TFD14D series. This is the complete assembly that slides in the slot between the prefilter and IFD filter. This part is assembled and ready to slide in,
expert installation is not necessary.
When installing this assembly note the air flow direction arrow that is stamped in to the plastic frame.
Size 14.3 x 20.3".
The assembly includes a 6 x 9 array of tungsten needles that create the ionizing field. The ionizing needles are powered with 9600 vdc from the center contact. On the inlet side of the assembly there is sheet metal perforated with 2" holes that align with the ionizing needles. These holes direct the air in to the heart of the ionizing field. The perforated steel is grounded to restrict the field. The steel is grounded through the off-center contact.
Air near the high-voltage ionizer needles breaks down in to ions and high energy electrons. This mixture of ions and electrons is called the corona plasma. The ions collide with suspended particulate and confer the charge.  The charged particulate is then attracted and captured by the IFD collection filter.
Check the needles for roughness, a side effect of the corona discharge is the growth of a white quartz layer. This is an unintended reaction with cyclomethycaine, a silicone oil present in household products such as deodorant sprays and skin lotions. This reaction leaves deposits of solid silicon dioxide on the ionizing needles. These insulating formations can suppress the corona pattern and intensity.
